After returning to his post as chief executive of Breitbart, Steve Bannon has been pursuing an aggressive campaign to oppose GOP incumbents that he calls the “season of war”. Well it appears he has now set his sights on Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and the Arizona Senate race. On Tuesday, Bannon emphatically pledged his support for Kelli Ward while warning the establishment that they should be prepared to “reap the whirlwind”. In a recent poll conducted by CB Polling, we showed Kelli Ward with a 16 point lead over Jeff Flake in what is shaping up to be a pivotal primary match up next year.
In a follow up to our Arizona primary polls, CB Polling conducted an online Google Consumer Survey of Arizona residents from October 16th to October 18th. Among those 1006 surveyed, 399 declared their intention to vote in the Arizona Senate election of 2018. 52% of respondents indicated they would vote for Kyrsten Sinema (D), while 48% indicated they would support Kelli Ward (R) in her Senate bid.
Kyrsten Sinema, who looks to easily win the nomination for the Democrats, appears to pose a serious threat to Flake’s seat. Flake already has his hands full with Kelli Ward, but Bannon’s fracturing of the GOP may ultimately erode republican strength in Arizona and Alabama, where Doug Jones has closed the gap with Roy Moore since our initial poll.
Donald Trump has been an outspoken critic of Jeff Flake since calling him “toxic” in an August tweet, but he has also expressed misgivings about Kelli Ward. It would be hard to imagine President Trump throwing his weight behind Flake after his recent public criticisms of the President and Strange’s defeat in Alabama. However, if Kelli Ward’s poll numbers continue to slump against Sinema, Trump may have no choice but to canvass for Flake and oppose his former chief strategist, Steve Bannon.
